The Figure
Sculptor Research Paper (A3) Choose a sculptor who works with the figure in a distorted or abstracted style vs. a realistic style. Write a thoughtful work demonstrating your knowledge and insight on your chosen artist.
General outline for your paper / slideshow:
1. Introduction & research statements about artist {Who and why did you choose them? What overall statements can be made about their work? What grabs your attention about this artist?}
2. Brief biography of artist {Education, training, interesting facts…}
3. Analyze formal themes in their work by comparing & contrasting specific works {What does the work look like? Descriptions, Elements/Principles…}
4. Analyze conceptual themes in their work {What is their work about? How do they portray their portrait subjects? What are the expressive qualities of their work?}
5. Analyze material process and artistic practice {What materials, tools, techniques do they use? What are the effects of their media? How and why do they do what they do?}Also include: Images of the artwork referenced & images cited & bibliography page

Individual Summative Figure Sculpture:
- Choose an idea, meaning or feeling you would like to express.
- Create a series of drawings to help you work out your options for form, shape, position, etc.
- Create a sculpture of the human form that expresses that feeling.
- The way in which you distort or abstract the human form should express your chosen idea, meaning or feeling.
Process:
- Create an armature from wire, newspaper, wooden blocks, foil, etc.
- Wrap the armature with plaster gauze to give it a surface / color.
- Sculptures should be table-top sized.
- Sculptures may need a base for stability.
